01 Start with what it actually is
Taş Tepeler — "the Stone Hills" — is a cluster of about a dozen Neolithic sites in Şanlıurfa, southeastern Türkiye, where hunter-gatherers raised rings of carved T-shaped pillars roughly eleven thousand years ago. Göbekli Tepe is the famous one; it is not the only one. Read these two first and the rest of the site will make sense.
02 Get your head around how old it is
The single hardest thing to feel is the age. Göbekli Tepe's oldest great buildings go back to around 9500 BCE — some 7,000 years before the pyramids or Stonehenge, and thousands of years before farming, pottery or writing. The timeline lays that out against things you already know.

03 Settle the 'who built it' question
Before the myths take hold: it was not a lost civilization, and it was not aliens. The builders were local hunter-gatherer communities, and that is exactly what makes the site important — monumental building came before farming, not after it.

06 Plan an actual visit
