Körtik Tepe, on the upper Tigris, is an early Neolithic site occupied around the very start of the period, about 10,000 BCE. It is known for hundreds of finely carved stone vessels — bowls and cups incised with animals and geometric designs — and for elaborate burials furnished with these objects.
Körtik Tepe shows that symbolic stone-working was not unique to the T-pillar sites. At the dawn of the Neolithic, communities across the region were carving stone with real skill and intent — a different, portable expression of the same creative moment that produced Göbekli Tepe's pillars.
